Textile Exchange Materials Matter Standard: 2026 Sourcing Update

Compliance Updates

Textile Exchange published 2026 guidance for its Materials Matter Standard and claims framework. Brands using related material claims should follow the official transition documents, effective dates and scope rather than assuming older certification language remains unchanged.

Start with the exact claim

Specify whether the project intends to make a recycled, preferred-material or chain-of-custody claim and identify which organization is responsible for substantiation and approval.

Map the supply-chain documents

Record the material source, certified parties, transaction or declaration documents where applicable, product references and approved claim wording. Missing links should be resolved before labels are printed.

Separate certification from product performance

A material standard does not replace fit, durability, color, restricted-substance or finished-product quality requirements. Keep the two approval tracks connected but distinct.

Follow transition dates

Standards and claims policies can change. Buyers should use the current Textile Exchange documents and obtain qualified certification guidance for the organization and product scope involved.

Key takeaway

Responsible-material claims need traceable documents, approved wording and current-standard verification.
